Self Publishing Workshop

With Caroline Gilfillan & Russell Holden

2 November 2019 | 9:30am – 11am | £15

George Romney School
Cobden Street, Dalton-in-Furness LA15 8SF

We think of Caroline Gilfillan as an Ulverston lass now for she is so passionate about the town, but she is a Southerner in fact, brought up in Sussex. She came north to gain an MA in creative writing at Lancaster University, since when she has taught it at several universities. She has written poetry all her life and has had poems published in many pamphlets and anthologies, including the recent, wonderful This Place I Know collection about Cumbria. In addition she is a singer/songwriter, a mentor and workshop leader [Lancaster Litfest, Borderlines], and last year saw the publication of her first novel, The Terrace.

Pixel Tweaks Publications is the imprint of Pixel Tweaks, a Graphic Design business managed by Senior Designer, Russell Holden offering self-publish services. He established the business in 2012 after working for several years for a local publisher. They now offer book production and a full range of graphic design services and, in 2012, were invited to team up with Sedbergh-based publishers, Handstand Press to work with owner Liz Nuttall on their projects. Up to now, we have produced over 100 books either under our imprint or for other publishers. Our books have been shortlisted several timed in the Lakeland Book of Year.

In 2016 Russ published his own book to add to the list: My Acoustic Nemesis: Life before, during and after an Acoustic Neuroma.

This workshop will concentrate on the popular and growing trend of self-publishing. Once disparagingly called “vanity publishing”, the improvements in printing techniques and ways of promoting books have made self-publishing the most common way of getting your precious work into print. But there are dangers and Caroline and Russ will take you through the process.
